Installation and Maintenance of X-ray Lead Glass
Lead glass used in X-ray glazing is a key element of radiological shielding, while at the same time being a sensitive material that requires proper installation, use, and regular maintenance.
This article is intended for users of X-ray viewing windows—technical staff and facility maintenance personnel—to reduce the risk of damage and complaints.
Installation of X-ray Lead Glass – General Remarks
The installation of X-ray lead glass differs significantly from standard glazing work and should not be treated as a typical building glass installation.
When installing radiological glass, the following rules must be strictly observed:
- Lead glass is extremely sensitive to pressure, shocks, impacts, and scratches
- Do not use knives or sharp tools
- Do not use acidic or alkaline agents (e.g. ammonia, acetic acid)
- Do not use adhesives or sealants containing chemically aggressive substances
- Do not apply tapes, films, or stickers
- X-ray glass must not be used outdoors
- The glass must be handled exclusively in a vertical position
- Installation must ensure continuity of radiological shielding
- The glass must be installed without stress
- The use of cotton gloves is recommended
Cleaning and Storage of X-ray Lead Glass
Lead glass is susceptible to scratching and reacts adversely to water, water vapor, and chemical fumes. The glass surface should not be left wet to dry, as this may lead to permanent discoloration.
In rooms with elevated humidity, regular inspection of X-ray glass surfaces and immediate removal of condensation are recommended.
Practical recommendations:
- Use only soft cotton or microfiber cloths
- Do not use aggressive cleaning agents
- If necessary, isopropyl alcohol may be used
- After cleaning, the glass must be immediately wiped dry and gently polished
Additional Protective Solutions and User Comfort
Modern X-ray glazing systems are increasingly integrated into modular wall constructions, where the lead glass is additionally protected by a cover pane. This solution protects the X-ray glass from mechanical damage, scratches, and contamination while maintaining a uniform and aesthetic wall surface.
The protective pane absorbs daily operational loads, significantly extending the service life of X-ray glazing and reducing the risk of costly repairs or replacement.
